Crushed Childhood Dreams

The first thing to ever be on my list of things to do in life was to go to a taping of The Price is Right.

Bob Barker has crushed that dream. If I had enough money to make it to the CBS studios in Hollywood for a show. I would, but I don't and won't in time.

Seriously, this is a crushed dream of the worst kind.

Crossin' my fingers

Everyone is getting sick. I (knock on wood) think that I missed it, at least the full force. I've heard at least five people say today "ya, but I'm taking double vitamin C so I won't get sick." I want to know if that is true. I've heard (from a so-so source) that the experiments that made people think that haven't worked when recreated. So I'm skeptic, maybe it's just because my mom didn't make me take vitamin C every winter.

Livin' at BU

Lake Michigan through some dune grass. This was my favorite picture from the annual trip to the cottage this year. It is the background on my loverly MacBook, Conor almost got beat up this weekend for making fun of my "generic" background. The then appologized profusely.

Life is gettin' back into the swing of things here at Butler. I'm missing my friday classes for a 7 hour bus ride to the far side of Ohio. We have a meet, it's our first overnighter. Yeah! (I think? maybe not really?) My opening to schedule my classes for next semester is Thursday at 12:30, very exciting. I'm looking at Biology (duh), Chemistry (duh again), my freshman humanities colloquium (American Dream/American Nightmare is the one I want, it's kinda of about the American Dream and how it failed in reality, readings include Willa Cather's My Antonis, Toni Morrison't The Bluest Eye, and Time O'Brien's The Things They Carried) and Into to Anthropology, and maybe my PE requirement (like health, swimming takes care of the activity PE requirement). The PE is a maybe because it would put me at 17 credit hours and I'm not sure I want to take that many considering I'm going to be missing a whole week of classes for conference. I have a meeting to talk about it with my advisor before I can schedule classes anyways. I thought I was going to be taking German this semester, but with the Chem and Bio I wanted it wasn't looking like a good possibility. I'm thinking about taking it at IUSB this summer, (this is news to my parents) but I'm not sure how that will play out. I still think I should learn some Spanish but the idea of taking 14 credit hours of a foreign language verses 8 is a hard pill to swallow.

Isabella and I are looking into changing the room around. We'll be unbunking the beds and moving to sides of the room with the fridge and tv under the window. It was my idea but she was cool with it. I want it for a couple of reasons. 1-I'm tired of the bunk bed 2-It's really hot up in the top bunk and Isabella is a warm room person so it can get really hot up there 3- it is a little weird having her desk in front of my closet 4- It will give us both more storage space because we will be able to put stuff under our beds.

So, I guess that is life at BU right now. I've reached the end of my thinking and it's time for me to get my less than 6 hours of sleep before I have to get up to lift.

Ridin' along in my automobile.....

Had a good time at home. The best part is a toss up between seeing Conor and getting a good nights sleep. I am ready to be back, mainly because I like it here. Only part that would be better would be having my own room. Nothing against my room mate, I'm just used to having my own room and I miss it. So it's all work work all the time until Thanksgiving, when it really doesn't stop, but hey, a girl can pretend.

I like how in my coloring book (which after I bought discovered was the same disney princesses coloring book I have at home, oh well) Ariel wishes on a star (which, or course, looks the christmas star) to be human.

Kentucky Two.

I'm not going to deny that if you read this, you read my dads blog so I'm not going to go through the hassle of trying to find the link the story about Saturday. Butler Swimming did win it's first meet in five years. I personally had two personal bests (but what else do you get when you've never swam those before). I swam the 1000, not bad, needs a little work but it was all good for the first time, the 100 breast, don't ask, I'm not sure what was going on, the 500, I guess not bad, swam it strategically well (I don't think I ever realized there was strategy, I just kinda got in the water and swam), and finally I swam the 200 free relay with a good 26-something split. (my dad just informed me it was a 26.86 and this hasn't even been posted yet)

One of the girls on the team had dinner at her house and that was very good. The bus ride was LONG and I am going to be feeling that one for a couple of days.

On other competion news...... The Marching Minutemen of CHS were at state this weekend. They got a bad time draw and were performing third. And, the age old marching band rule was in affect, play early, can't win. They ended up fourth. A certain boy said he was disappointed but I didn't get much out of him. He was asleep in the chair (a very uncomfortable chair for even sitting) when I called, and went straight of to bed, I would have to with 1 hour of sleep.

Well, it's time for lunch at A-town.

not innocent......

Couldn't find anything for innocent. I just found this....... and this poem is from one of my classes, and I thought parts of it applied, but you can't really edit poetry

View With a Grain of Sand

We call it a grain of sand
but it calls itself neither grain nor sand.
It does just fine without a name,
whether general, particular,
permanent, passing,
incorrect or apt.

Our glance, our touch mean nothing to it.
It doesn't feel itself seen and touched.
And that it feel on the windowsill
is only our experience, not its.
For it it's no different than falling on anything else
with no assurance that it's finished falling
or that it's falling still.

(Ok I lied, two of seven stanzas in enough.)

Kentucky

Saturday- (tentative) 1000, 500, 100, 200 free relay.

So, the southern kids (I've noticed Seymour and Evensville) really do have accents. I never believed the people who told me I had an accent. Did I really sound like that? Not that they sound bad or weird. huh, the things we don't notice.

My day.

Soooo... pretty exciting Coach cancelled tomorrows morning practice so we could be rested for the meet Saturday. Word is (Coach says) we have a good chance of winning (both men and women) this duel meet, and it would be the first duel meet win for Butler swimming in........ Is it something like 6 years? It was Carlton's freshman year and he is a P4. Don't feel like doing the math.

I also almost killed myself walking up the stairs.... twice. Don't trip up stairs it isn't good for your health.

And MOST IMPORTANTLY!!! It was the season finally of PR!!! (Project Runway) And, as much as Jeffery is an ass, I'm glad he won b/c I thought his collection was the best, and I wanted it. Escpecially this.........

I know, I can't believe I watch PR either, but... I do. Accept it, at least I don't watch America's Next Top Model.

Need to head of to bed. It's that time.

Dear Abby

Everyone needs to read today's Dear Abby (yes, I read dear abby, get over it I read CNN too). Here, I'll even (illegally probably) put it here for your enjoyment.

STRAYING SPOUSES, STRAIGHT OR GAY, CAN SPREAD STDs
DEAR ABBY: I have a couple of issues with the answer you gave "Dumbfounded in San Jose" (8/16), the woman who discovered that her husband had a homosexual relationship in college 20 years ago. Had she discovered the relationship was with a woman, would you have advised her similarly?

You implied that, because he was bisexual, he is more inclined to be adulterous and unsafe. Being bi does not mean you necessarily have relationships with men and women, but that you can be attracted to and possibly have relationships with both sexes. You have perpetrated a stigma that homosexuals and bisexuals are unfaithful and unsafe. He has chosen to spend his life with her, so it's possible he has been faithful to that commitment. -- PHILADELPHIA READER

DEAR PHILADELPHIA READER: Let me refresh your memory. The man was overheard discussing the four-year affair he had with his college roommate when the man came to visit. They were overheard by his 16-year-old son. The wife would like to discuss it with her son and her husband "to control the damage" -- but the son "refuses and is now pretending it's not important."

I advised her that if her son didn't think it was important, he wouldn't have told her. I also said she needed to find out if her husband's bisexual activity had continued after college, and that she should be tested for STDs. That is, by the way, the same advice I have given in the past to spouses of both sexes who suspect their partner has had heterosexual affairs.

In addition, I urged family counseling because the writer was unaware of her husband's prior sexual history and the news is bound to have an effect on their marriage -- and because their son may need reassurance and help working through this. Read on:
DEAR ABBY: I was appalled by your response to "Dumbfounded in San Jose." For many people, attraction is not necessarily about gender. It's about the other person. It's entirely possible that this homosexual affair was a one-time thing, based on a special attraction, and that the husband is not skulking around back alleys with other men. If so, he is not automatically an AIDS risk.

You should be fair and give this man, and his marriage, the benefit of the doubt before rushing to the emergency room. (And yes, I live "there," and maybe have been brainwashed by the evil homosexual underground into thinking there's more than one way to approach sexual orientation.) -- APPALLED IN SAN FRANCISCO

DEAR APPALLED: Although it is possible that the four-year affair in college was a "one-time" thing, in my opinion "experimentation" is taking a nibble of the cake, not consuming the entire thing. And remember, this man kept it a secret from the woman he married. If there were no men carrying on clandestine affairs with other men while pretending to be strictly heterosexual, I wouldn't be concerned.

What I find extremely worrisome -- and it goes beyond the facts of this letter -- is that sexually transmitted diseases that could be prevented are rampant in this country because of ignorance. Sexually active seniors are getting AIDS because they think they're somehow exempt from having to take the same precautions young people do. Parents are refusing to have their daughters vaccinated against a virus that's linked to cervical cancer because they're afraid it will give them permission to have sex before marriage. (Has it not occurred to them that these girls can cross the altar as virgins and be infected by their husbands?) Men have unprotected sex with other men and call it something else.

Sometimes I ask myself if we're living in the United States or a State of Denial. My advice was the prudent thing to do.

links

Also, I would add links to others blogs. But... I don't know how. So, those of you who read this, thank you. And update your own blogs, especially on Saturdays and Sundays b/c that is when I get really bored and surf blogs.

Swimmin'

So, we had our first two meets this weekend. Exciting, Exciting. They were ok, would have been better if...... one saturday we had gotten back when the schedule said, not more than two hours later, and on sunday if it hadn't been so long (stupid diving).

I swam ok. About how I expected from what everyone has been saying. (You'll completely stink until you taper and then you'll drop a ton of time). So all in all, not that bad. I did get the chance to prove myself today when I ended up on the 400 free relay at the last second. So that was good, I think I did what was expected there. The only real disappointment was realizing I don't know what my best 500 time is. How did that happen. So, dad, what is my best 500 time. It was section finals, I do know that.

Dishes

So, I've been watching tv this weekend (ahh, the food channel, how I missed you). Anyway, I keep seeing the new Corelle commercial and thinking of a story my mom has told me many a time.

She went to a friends house (roommate?). The friends dad was showing her these new dishes, and as when he dropped one to show how durable they are, it broke.

In the commercial, models go down the runway and slip and drop the Corelle dishes to show how they don't break. Made me giggle because 1- I've heard that sound many a time in my life and 2- I've also heard and seen those dishes break.

Bored.

So, I'm bored. Not really a big surprise huh? With no one here I didn't really doubt I wouldn't be. Hopefully tomorrow won't be as boring. Yeah for the first meet, I think.

Friday the what?

Happy Friday the 13th. You're not goin' out tonight are ya?

Alone.

And, I am finally alone. You know there have been times I've been alone, you know by myself, but you're never actually alone. But, it's "reading break" so everyone is gone. While I do wish I was were they all are, it's very nice being here by myself.

how is it?

How is it that even after getting three straight nights of nine hours of sleep I am more tired than I have been on days that I only get three hours of sleep? Sure, we did 5000 yards, but that isn't much really. I mean, it's not like we had a morning today. Ugggg, so tired.

Plus, everyone else is gloating about getting to go home.......

food

So I've spent this weekend trying to eat through all the food in my room. I figure that if I eat it all, then in the long run it's better b/c I won't be eating it then. (minus the grain bars, those are for morning practice days, and the target brand aren't really that good so I don't really want to eat them).

It's a small world afterall

So, I was walking through my local Macy's today thinking to myself "wow, the guy behind the makeup counter has good hair." I'll admit it, I was being steriotypical, it was "the gay guy behind the makeup counter." But that isn't the point. The point is that when I walked by, still wondering how he managed to get his hair to look that good b/c most girls can't get their hair to look that good, when it was all I could do not to stop and stare with my jaw dropped. Yes, it is a small world, his name is Adam and we are both graduates of Concord High School, class of 2006. No, I didn't say hi, he was helping a customer.

missing...

So, there are a lot of things I miss from home. But at this very moment I miss the fact that when emergency vehicles were driving, you only heard the siren for like 30 seconds, not for a full two minutes. Or longer, cause it is still going and going and going and it's the fricken' energizer bunny.

No comments. Never any comments. Don't you people realize I need things to do on a on the weekend. I'll just continue with my gold fish......

Holiday

They should make Saturday's a Holiday. Every Saturday should just be national nap day because it's the only think that happens on Saturday's anyways.

library....

So, my friend Josie and I are studying for our Chemistry Exam..... in the library. I guess as you noticed, Josie is studying for our Chemistry Exam, I'm updating my blog, then I am going to read for my writing class. Just thought I would mention that I am finally "studying" at the library.

"funny joke"

My algebra professor actually told a funny joke today. Of course I am a nerd so I was the only one who got it.

How is Washington like a tree?

It lost all it's Foley-age!!

Ok that wasn't quite it, I think his version was funnier. But I thought is was amusing.

Sorry....

The costs of higher education are also hurting middle-class families like never before. In this increasingly credentialed society, the total cost of tuition, fees, room and board at four-year public colleges and universities has ballooned 44 percent over the past four years. And the proportion of family income it takes to pay for college is growing for families everywhere. The biggest jump, according to the National Center for Higher Education, is in Ohio, where college costs now take 42 percent of the average family budget, up from 28 percent in the early 1990s. (CNN.com)

Sorry Mom and Dad, hey, at least we don't live in Ohio.

I thought......

So I thought they were saying the US was lagging behind in the area of science.....

Kornberg is the lone winner of the 2006 chemistry prize, and the fifth American to win a Nobel prize this year. So far, all the prizes -- medicine, physics and chemistry -- have gone to Americans. (CNN.com)

Hot.

So, I cleaned my room last Saturday (Friday?) night. I know shocking, but stuff got picked up. One of the things that got picked up and put away was the fan that pointed at my bed (the top bunk). So know that it has been cooling off to a nice temperature they turn on the heat. And if is fricken' hot. And there is no longer a fan pointing at my bed. It stinks b/c I like having the room on my dresser and can't bring myself to pull the fan back out of the closet. I'm just going to complain instead.

Hard to believe.

Columbine was big deal, how many years ago? I can't even tell you. But this week, goodness. Three school shootings in a week. First a guy comes into a Colorado school to molest 6 girls before killing one and himself, then there is the kid who shot his principal. But, who honestly goes into an Amish one-room school and kills three students and an aid before killing himself.

I guess I thought things in the area of school safety were getting better, but maybe not. I still don't get, who shoots little Amish girls?

I knew this!!!

Wow, I've learned about this. Think of how fast things get out there in the world now. (link title)

Request...

Mom requested a report on the high ropes course.

The high ropes course, well, I'm not sure it was fun, but it wasn't not fun. It also wasn't as cool and the other high ropes course that I had done. I went up the easy way, just because I didn't want to be to tired to do anything else. The easy way was the rope grid tied down, the hard way was an untied down rope grid to a "ladder" were the rungs were not attached to each other. So i went up the easy way, don't ask how high it was, I don't know. I did everything but the buddy part because it would have put me on the opposite side of getting down. So everything was, a wooden bridge (slats far apart), a log, one of those bridges were the steps are rope loops, this wire one were you braced yourself with a rope by pushing out "like a bench press", and then a multi vine one, were you walked on a wire and used ropes hanging down to help you balance. I also did the swing at the end. That was scary. I don't think it helped that the lady over there was one of those people who has taken to many classes on how to relate to people and thus can't really relate to people. I sat there for probably a full two min. before I went.

Wasn't anything special really.

Bodily Functions Warning! Warning!

Why is after-sleep-pee denser than water and awake-pee isn't? Or am I just weird?

It never ends.

I'm beginning to understand why fall break isn't called fall break. It's call reading break because that is all you are going to be doing, besides two swim meets.
