the things you hear in college

I'm not the most up to date person to talk to about things that matter in the world but I know better than this.....

"were is Uganda?"
"It's in Sudan"
"Isn't that what all the middle-east is fighting about?"

A real conversation.

7-Up

I can't remember who I was having this discussion with but I've had it resently. I grew up with Sprite and 7-Up (which I realize is normal seeing as Sierra Mist wasn't around), but when the rest of the world switched to Sierra Mist I missed the memo. So... I was trying to figure out distributers because I thought Sprite was coke and 7-Up was pepsi, but Sierra Mist is served at Pepsi places, not 7-Up. I tried to figure it out and I think I got it. The question here is if I can really trust Wikapedia on this. Sprite is coke brand, no questions there. 7-Up used to be bottled by Pepsi but is really owned by someone else. So, in 2000 Pepsi made their own brand (Sierra Mist) and (only in the US) has nothing more to do with 7-Up which is now bottled by independent distriputers. Thank you very much.

Gucci.

So my buddy Momo and I went to lunch and Walgreens one day in P.R. Everytime we left our hotel we had to walk by Gucci, and some other designer stores. I guess Momo has a friend who was one shooed away from a Gucci store so she was a little intimidated by them. I convinced her to go in, we went in Louis Vuitton because that was her first choice. The doorman/guard at Gucci laughed at us as we took our pictures outside it, so we went in there too. Honestly? I didn't see anything I wanted.

I had apple pie with dinner....

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play

Classes

Classes start tomorrow. That means everyone is back, so far that has been the worst part of the week. I'm glad to be back from San Juan, but it was really nice being alone in the dorms.

Home from San Juan

We are back!! Yeah! And to top it off, I get to see my Dad and Conor tomorrow at the swim meet. The only downside is that classes start soon and all the rush girls are here.

These three pictures are from my trip to El Morro. About 7 of us walked over there and 5 of us did the fort. The first one is of the view of the beach on the walk there, the second is an example of the architecture in Old San Juan, and then me on a fort wall with Old San Juan in the background.

San Juan 3

Meet tomorrow!!! Ok, that doesn't really need all the !!! but oh well. Things here are winding down (YES!!!!!!!!, and that one does need all the !!!!!!!). I'm ready to be back in Indiana, not ready for classes to start or to go back to sharing my room but I think that all comes with going on. This trip really means the beginning of the downhill part of the season. Krista said Christmas Break made her hate swimming, I don't hate swimming (which I can really handle) but the team on the other hand. All nice people but sometimes it just doesn't work for me.

On a better note. We hit the rain forest El Yunque. That was pretty neat, not as cool as snorkeling but still cool. I swam in a waterfall (first one from the team in!!), and that was really cool. I wish we could have done the hiking slower so I could have gotten better pictures. I tried though. I think I've gotten some good ones but I forgot the cord to put them on my computer, good thing I got a memory card for Christmas.

Yesterday a few of us walked to Old San Juan. (Long walk FYI). We hit the old fort there, El Morro, or Fort Brooke. That was really amazing and the views were worth more than the $3 we paid to get in. Old San Juan was more along the lines that I was thinking San Juan was going to be like. It had the French and Spanish architecture and really close little streets and the kind of food joints/stands that I was thinking we would see. I really liked it and I think we are going to get to go back tomorrow.

4 more practices, 3 more days, 2 more nights, 1 meet, and completely ready to go home.

San Juan 2

I wish I had interesting stuff to tell you but mostly we practice and sleep and try to find food in the middle of the night.

We did have yesterday off to go snorkeling on the other side of the island. That was really cool. We saw sea cucumbers and other things on the reef. They feed us AMAZING empinadas (spelling??). Then we headed out to a bay we the plankton are bioluminesent. That was cool too (it was like the water around you glowed as you swam).

Other than that not much has been going on besides swimming.

San Juan

We are here. That is we (the Butler Swim Team) are in San Juan. It is warm, kinda like an Indiana summer, warm and humid. The only difference is the rain that forms from the humidity. At least its only a sprinkle for about five minutes.

Traveling went fine, it was just a long day. We had a practice last night and that was not fun. I was stressed out to begin with from traveling and them we get to the pool and it starts getting dark during practice (note- this practice is the 2 hour slot before our evening practices for the rest of the trip). Between the pool being cloudy and there being practacly no lights around the pool you couldn't see much. Not good for Julie who HATES it when she can't see through water.

Today has been fun. We got up and had breakfast at had plenty of time to get ready and stuff, as a matter of fact, we had a little too much time and I would have been fine with some more sleep. Practice was ok, the water is just really slow (or thick feeling, take your pick). Dryland sucked, we thought we were going to have weight facilities but I guess we don't so we ran, a lot, outside. Boys in shorts, girls in shorts and a sports bra. Then we did some quick abs, which were a lot harder than normal. Came back and grabbed some lunch (Subway, goal, not to eat Subway anymore, probably won't happen seeing as there are at least two of them in walking distance of the hotel and its cheapish. Want to try something interesting tonight. I (and various others many that came and went with time) spent a couple of hours (2.5 I think) playing in the waves. You know those really big ones that are kinda scary, ya those. We didn't got out to far and even stayed in after hearing someone had died less than a mile down the beach. We all made it, maybe with a lot of sand in unmentionable places but its all good. Mo was upset he missed it and says he is in tomorrow. We've got another practice in a few hours and then dinner and bed and do it all again!!!

2007

Happy New Year Y'all. The fire works are going off some were, I can hear 'em. I've been in my pj's for three hours, I'm seeing a bed in my near future. (oh, and Sinbad blowing up a hotel is WAAAYYYY cooler than Dick Clarks Rockin' New Years, the whole 5 min I watched it).
