Heidelburg
Saturday, instead of sleeping in or going to the library we headed off on an adventure to grand 'ole Heidelburg. We took a tour of the old town and the castle, though I must admit I am getting rather tired of tours. Good thing the town is ridiculously picturesque.
A tributary of the Rhine travels through the main portion of town (and is know to flood periodically, wreaking havoc as floods are prone to do). Heidelberg is also home to Germany's oldest University. The University of Heidelberg was found in 1386 and is still functioning today. There is also a castle which is home to the worlds largest wine barrel.
After our tour we walked around a bit, mostly wandering before dinner. The professor from DHV chose the restaurant so we ended up with some traditional German food for dinner. I braved something I recognized as sausage and sauerkraut. The following conversation ensued between me and Magnus (who deserves some huge thanks for navigating the streets of Heidelburg, the bus system, and the train system to get us home that night) just as I dug into my food.
Magnus: Julie, do you know what you are eating?
Julie: No, and I don't want to.
M: Have you heard of Haggis?
J: MAGNUS! You can tell me after dinner.
M: Well, it's...
J: No. After dinner.
Following dinner he did of course share that I had basically eaten ground stomach. Meh. The best part were his hand motions in describing the process and the girl from South Korea's response: "Oh, we have the same thing in Korea."
Following dinner all the American's (including our professor from IU) just hung out in Heidelberg grabbing desert and drinks. We all made it back safely after enjoying a day of beautiful scenery. (Seriously, will this ever stop feeling like a theme park? Or Vegas?)
